2007 Trip To Jhailow back to Heinz Homepage |

7/2007: The Jhailow is the summer pasturage of Kazakh shepherds. It is 3 hours to the edge and extends many hours in every direction. We spent 3 days there in mid July of 2007. Although this was primarily a short vacation for us, we shared tracts, scripture, and some of our testimony with the Kazakh families we have met there in the past.
We slept in sleeping bags inside the truck and cooked on a propane stove using food and water we had carried from home. We hiked and talked and finished reading "To Kill a Mockingbird" by the camp fire. We also visited our Kazakh friends, got caught up on what was happening in their lives, ate sheep head and sheep meat, and drank gallons of tea. This year was special because Lucy had been away at college for a year.
Amanda and Lucy got to ride horses for a few hours one day. They also received offers of marriage in exchange for livestock. Noah and I also did some climbing. See below. |

Photos Above and Below: Noah and I did some climbing. We hiked to the top of a 14,000 foot mountain from our truck which was at about 10,000 feet. The day was fair most of the time but we ran into sleet and hail at the top of the mountain and got soaked through with a 1 hour hike still in front of us to return to camp. We also had some tense moments with some of the huge sheep-herding dogs as we crossed their turf. |
